Assigned in 1947 as one of the original North American Numbering Plan area codes, 212 initially covered all five New York City boroughs. In 1984 the city was split: Brooklyn, Queens, and Staten Island moved to 718, while Manhattan and the Bronx stayed under the original code. A 1992 realignment moved the Bronx to 718, leaving Manhattan as the sole geographic area. Overlays followed: 917 in 1992 across the entire city—at first common for wireless devices—then 646 in 1999 and 332 in 2017 for Manhattan. Ten-digit dialing became standard as demand grew.
Beyond administration, the code became shorthand for Manhattan identity and central business districts, from Wall Street to Midtown media towers. Scarcity of legacy numbers and their visibility in film, television, and advertising made them markers of long-established presence. The overlay era mirrored shifts in the city’s economy—growth in services, finance, media, and tech—and the rise of mobile communications.
